I think the theme of religion is touched here in the passage. The old man who approaches Mae and Francis assures her that she has rescued all the souls , and Mae compares it to the halo. This may be a religious parallel which could emphasize on the theme that if the plot is paving its path towards all-good utopia or all-bad dystopia.
